The vast fortune accumulated by the du Ponts from the
manufacture of gunpowder and chemicals created many mansions, four
of which have been opened to the public. They show the magnificent
collections of art and furnishings family members amassed and the
beautiful settings in which they were placed.
Hagley Museum near Wilmington is the original mill, estate and
gardens of dynasty founder Eleuthere Irenee. Nemours Mansion and
Gardens, also near Wilmington, was the home of his great-grandson,
Alfred I. du Pont. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa.,
described as a "Versailles of hothouses, rose gardens and fountains"
by a chronicler, belonged to Pierre Samuel du Pont II, another ...
