Article: Senate panel delays Gates hearings by two months

WASHINGTON -- The Senate Intelligence Committee yesterday delayed for two months its confirmation hearings of Robert M. Gates to head the Central Intelligence Agency while it delves more deeply into questions about Gates' role in the Iran-contra affair.

While saying that the committee has not uncovered evidence to threaten Gates' confirmation, the chairmen said committee members need time to pursue the possibility that Gates knew more about the diversion of arms sales profits to assist the US-backed Nicaraguan rebels.
