Charlestown venture capitalist Arnold L. Mende has conceived a
plan that he feels could create 500 engineering, shipbuilding and
steel fabrication jobs on Boston's waterfront and help restore the
city as a major East Coast ship repair center.
The plan involves the purchase and merger of the port's only two
remaining major ship repair and heavy steel fabricating firms. It
also calls for reopening the 1,200-foot long, 42-foot deep Drydock
No. 3 in South Boston -- which was built in the 1920s to hold
transatlantic ocean liners.
The drydock would be equipped to do work in conjunction with the
multi-million dollar Third Harbor Tunnel project.
