Article: White House readying campaign for Thomas

WASHINGTON -- When some of the country's principal civil rights and civil liberties groups declare their opposition this week to Clarence Thomas, President Bush's Supreme Court nominee, his supporters will not be sitting idly by.

Instead, key members of the US Senate will receive visits from some poor black Georgians who were Thomas' neighbors during his boyhood. They will be here to underscore his hardscrabble origins and plead with the senators for their votes to confirm him -- with the visit recorded by television news crews and paid for by a conservative lobbying group.
