TORONTO -- The dog days of August are upon us, but the Toronto Blue Jays are geared to make it prime time, and the so-called contenders in the American League East had better take notice.

That's especially true for the Red Sox, who once were a favorite to claim the division banner for the second straight year. But as they prepare to open what was supposed to be a three-game summit meeting tonight at Fenway Park, the Sox face a sobering realization -- lagging far behind the Blue Jays, they must slow down the leaders this month, or September could become a mere coronation procession for Toronto.
