NICOSIA, Cyprus -- The Turkish Cypriot leader questioned
yesterday whether US-organized talks to reunite the island can be
staged by next month, saying major issues that crippled past peace
efforts are still unresolved.
The rival Greek Cypriot leader welcomed the United States' efforts
to settle the nation's 17-year division, but also hinted concessions
on both sides will be needed.
Plans by President Bush to hold a UN-mediated conference on the
war-divided island nation face an array of obstacles, including
overcoming the legacy of bitter conflict and mistrust between Greece
and Turkey.
