Article: Good memories linger Davis, cast aside by Red Sox in '49, `had fun' in Negro Leagues

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Age is a curse to Lorenzo (Piper) Davis. At 74, the dates run together and memories of the good times are the first things that come to mind. Only at a reunion at the Hall of Fame of these onetime stars of the Negro Baseball Leagues would he have to even think about what might have been had he played for the Red Sox.

But it was a subject he could hardly avoid. Davis was the first black player the American League club signed in 1949, some 10 years before Pumpsie Green and Earl Wilson made it to the majors. It mattered little that the Red Sox paid him $5,000 and invited him to spring training, only to dump him six weeks later.
