Heroin is increasingly available on Boston streets because a bumper
crop of Southeast Asian opium poppies has cut the price and increased
the quality of the drug, law enforcement officials said yesterday.
"There has been a marked increase in the availability of heroin,"
said Stephen Morreale, special agent with the federalDrug Enforcement
Administration office in Boston. "The heroin availability has made
us sit up and take notice."
"There is a cheaper product out there," said Deputy
Superintendent James Wood, commanding officer of the Boston Police
Department's drug control unit. Dealers who a year ago were selling
cocaine now are attempting to sell heroin, he said.
