of show business. He won an Oscar at the age of 80. He survived the
death of a beloved partner and went on to achieve the status of

Yesterday morning, it was all over. The great American
comedian George Burns died at his home in Beverly Hills seven weeks
after celebrating his 100th birthday. His four-decade stint as
straight man to his wife, Gracie Allen, had ended in 1958 when she
retired, but Burns endured. New generations came to know him as the
star of the "Oh, God!" movie comedies, of the film version of Neil
