Can it really be that Dire Straits' last album came out before the
Live Aid concert in 1985? That album, "Brothers in Arms," had the
worldwide No. 1 hit, "Money for Nothing," with its insanely catchy
verse: "I want my MTV." Whatever they wanted they got after that,
filling stadiums and selling 3 million tickets on a global tour that
vaulted singer/leader Mark Knopfler into the headiest of
stratospheres.
But a tired Knopfler took formal leave of Dire Straits in 1988,
announcing his decision in Boston while guesting in Eric Clapton's
band. Knopfler said he wanted more time with his twin year-old sons.
