In Richard Greenberg's "Eastern Standard," a chic executive
named Phoebe trades secrets with her equally natty brother Peter.
Sotto voce, she confides the details of a dream in which she dances
perilously on the rim of a champagne glass. Without skipping a beat,
Peter confesses, "I'm going to be dead soon."
This casual exchange pits the hollow values of the thirtysomething
generation against the angst of the day. Illusions of comfort, like
so many champagne bubbles, are exploded by the realities of urban
