Boxing's Biggest Risk
I feel compelled to respond to Abigail Trafford's commentary,
"Boxing's Biggest Risk" {Second Opinion, Feb. 20}.
As a practicing physician and former amateur boxer, I have
consistently supported the view that football should be banned as a
sport in schools and boxing adopted in its place so that all ages
and all weight groups may participate. Compared with other sports,
with the possible exception of fencing, boxing teaches agility,
constitutes excellent aerobic activity, and improves timing,
strength, courage and endurance.
The American Medical Association has cited statistics showing
that since 1940 some 330 deaths have occurred in amateur and
