Maps are in the news, as cartographers go crazy trying to cope
with the shifting national borders that are the result of recent
political turmoil. Maps are newly important for artists, too, as an
offbeat show at the DeCordova Museum demonstrates. While maps have
been used in the recent past by contemporary artists as diverse as
Robert Rauschenberg and Sol Lewitt, there suddenly seems to be a
startling concentration of artists who are placing maps and charts at
the heart of their work. Noting the phenomenon, DeCordova curators
Rachel Rosenfield Lafo and Nicholas Capasso have come up with "Land,
Sea, and Sky: Maps in Contemporary Art," which features map-related
work by 23 New England ...
