For those of us who witnessed one of the Halston fashion shows at his enormous mirrored-glass-and-steel showroom on the 22d floor of the monolithic Olympic Tower, with its wraparound, panoramic view of Manhattan, Martha Graham sitting in the place of honor, and the simply cut, flattering-to-every-shape coats, capes and bathing suits, it is understandable to read, in Steven Gaines' new and detailed account, that Halston's personal life was in shambles even then.
