CHICAGO -- Defending champion Patricia Smith, a poet and critic
for the Boston Globe, won the second annual National Poetry Slam in
Chicago with rousing odes that made "the audience a little
uncomfortable."
A four-poet team from Chicago late Saturday won the team
competition -- and the pair of gilded boxing gloves that went with
the title. The poetry slam style of emotional, almost theatrical
poetry readings originated in Chicago and has spread to other cities.
A crowd of more than 400 people attended the finals of the
competition held at the Cabaret Metro nightclub on the city's North
Side. A panel of five other poets judged the event.
