A television talk-show host once attempted to compliment Elvis
Costello by suggesting his current music was, perhaps, more mature.
" `Mature?' " answered Costello, eyebrows arched, distaste
evident, ". . . it sounds like cheese."
Chris Difford -- lyricist/rhythm guitarist for the British
new-wave era band Squeeze, and a former collaborator with Costello --
probably wouldn't turn his nose up at the suggestion of maturity.
Writing with Squeeze singer/lead guitarist Glenn Tilbrook, Difford
will keep crafting songs for his own generation.
"I guess the earlier songs, like `Cool for Cats' and that sort of
thing," says Difford, "were very much written at a time when
adolescence was prevalent ...
