Article: Weld favors lethal injection if death penalty is restored

Gov. Weld will advocate lethal injection as the state's method of execution, but also wants to give condemned prisoners the choice of a firing squad if the death penalty is restored in Massachusetts, an administration member said yesterday.

"He has decided that lethal injection is going to be the method," the source said. "The governor sent that down to the legal office, but with some provision . . . to give the person an option to choose another method if he has some objection to lethal injection."

The source said Weld's alternative "is the firing squad, and not something that is going to cost the state a lot of money."

Weld has yet to introduce legislation restoring the death penalty. But ...
