Breast cancer is not the leading killer of women. Cardiovascular
illness, mainly heart disease, is.
Breast cancer is not even the leading killer of women among
cancers. Since 1987, lung cancer has had that dubious distinction.
But breast cancer has the power to strike terror into women's
hearts as perhaps no other disease can -- for a number of reasons,
not the least of them that breast cancer has for so long made so many
women feel so powerless.
Some of this feeling comes from the fact there is almost nothing a
woman can do to prevent breast cancer. Some comes from the knowledge
