A contention by two Toronto psychiatrists that chronic fatigue
syndrome is widely overdiagnosed is stirring up a hornet's nest among
many of the people who think they have it.
In a respected medical journal, Drs. Susan Abbey and Paul
Garfinkel argue that the majority of people with a self- or
physician-conferred diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome are
actually suffering from a known psychiatric disorder, severe stress
or an identifiable medical illness. While a small subgroup of these
people may actually have a distinct and still mysterious infectious
