D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, relaxed and upbeat at his first news
conference since undergoing surgery four weeks ago, took on critics
yesterday who say his new budget proposal doesn't add up and
announced he will go back to work in the office on Monday.
Emerging from a month of semi-seclusion during which he
recuperated from prostate cancer surgery, Barry defended his plans
for cutting $150 million from the city's 1996 budget and lashed out
at a D.C. Council staff member, Harry Black, who has said the
proposal badly understates the city's potential deficit.
But the mayor also engaged in banter about his health and his
month at home, quipping that he is driving his wife crazy ...
