Article: Oliver Stone as Historian

In his op-ed piece castigating Oliver Stone for distorting history in "Nixon" {"White Lies and Whoppers," Jan. 1}, Robert D. Novak reveals himself to be an advocate of the very act he condemns. Mr. Novak writes that "Stone's defenders have noted that Shakespeare distorted history and concocted imaginary conspiracies. Henry V was glorified and Richard defamed, without regard to historical accuracy. But Shakespeare was falsifying history in the interests of the Tudor dynasty's legitimacy and the greater glory of England. Stone remorselessly undermines his country."
