HERZLIYA, Israel - Israel is observing the saddest, angriest, most
isolated Independence Day in its 54-year existence.
Most cities and towns canceled the open-air music, dancing, and
fireworks that normally would have marked the beginning of the
observance last night, and many municipalities canceled their
celebrations altogether, saying that gaiety was not in order with
soldiers and civilians dying daily and with Israel locked in a
seemingly endless struggle with the Palestinians.
Frightened by an unprecedented wave of suicide bombings that has
struck almost every corner of the country since January, citizens
