James DePreist, the National Symphony Orchestra's guest
conductor this week, is a searching and exceedingly musical artist.
On Thursday night, DePreist led a program of works by Barber,
Schubert, Hindemith, Paul Epstein and Daniel Bortz at the Kennedy
Center -- a program that will be repeated tonight at 8:30 and
Tuesday at 7 and which deserves the attention of any venturesome
music lover.
Now music director of the Oregon Symphony in Portland, DePreist
is one of several distinguished maestros who either began or
advanced their careers as associate conductors for the NSO (other
alumni include Hugh Wolff, Andrew Litton and Christian Badea). He
