NEW YORK - An elite team of Boston scientists yesterday unveiled a broad effort to help restore one of the body's most heavily used but delicate attributes: the human voice.

With $2 million in new grants, researchers from four major Boston institutions described how they are applying disciplines as diverse as tissue engineering, surgery and bridge building to the challenging art of repairing vocal cords.

It is a cause personified by Julie Andrews, the film and stage star whose singing career ended in the late 1990s after an operation on her vocal cords resulted in significant damage.
