By the map, the Neponset River should have been cleaving through an urban landscape: Milton to the kayaker's right, Hyde Park and Mattapan to his left. But for more than a mile there had been no sign of human life on a recent Sunday afternoon, a rail yard and the vestiges of factories along the shore walled from view by vegetation.
