By the map, the Neponset River should have been cleaving through
an urban landscape: Milton to the kayaker's right, Hyde Park and
Mattapan to his left. But for more than a mile there had been no sign
of human life on a recent Sunday afternoon, a rail yard and the
vestiges of factories along the shore walled from view by vegetation.
Indeed, the only company the solo paddler had was several ducks and a
great blue heron that kept leap frogging ahead, too timid or dumb to
let the boat pass. Just downstream from Mattapan Square, the
river's pace accelerated through an "S" turn to a velocity that
slopped waves over the bow and filled the air with the murmur of
