Dr. Juan M. Taveras, 82, a radiologist at Massachusetts General
Hospital who is considered "The Father of Neuroradiology," died March
28 in his native Dominican Republic.
Before Dr. Taveras established the first training program in
neuroradiology in New York in the 1950s, all neuroradiological
procedures were conducted by neurosurgeons. Dr. Taveras demonstrated
that these procedures, which now include X-rays, CT scans, and
magnetic resonance images, could be done safely and interpreted more
accurately when conducted by radiologists.
"He truly was a visionary," Dr. Gilberto Gonzalez, current
