John Hancock Financial Services kicked off its yearly
shareholders' meeting yesterday with a self-congratulatory video
about the importance of life insurance and the place of John Hancock
in the industry. When the lights came back up, though, corporate
secretary Barry Rubenstein stepped to the podium with a statement
that the Boston insurer's 8,000 employees and 775,000 shareholders
might take more as a strategic manifesto than a boiler-plate warning.
"Any forward-looking statements made here today are subject to
risks and uncertainties," he told the crowd of several hundred in the
aging John Hancock Hall near Copley Square.
