World chess champion Garry Kasparov, humiliated by a computer
named Deep Blue in Game 1 of a highly touted match, bounced back on
Sunday by employing a new strategy: Avoid risks and play for safe
positions.
"If you threaten, the machine will counterattack," he said.
"But if there is no threat, the machine will go about its business
and eventually give you an opportunity."
The six-game chess match will end on Saturday. After the
computer's easy win in the first game, people began to wonder
whether Kasparov -- considered by many to be the strongest player in
history -- might have to accept the superiority of the machine. But
