As the former and current governors of South Carolina, a host
of Republican office-holders, former vice president Dan Quayle and
5,000 college students cheered and prayed for him today, 93-year-old
Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) hinted at his desire to seek a
record-breaking eighth term in the U.S. Senate.
"I'm not in a position to formally announce anything just
yet," said Thurmond, who next month will become history's oldest
sitting senator, to a fervent crowd at fundamentalist Christian Bob
Jones University. University authorities called the rally a
"mandatory convocation," canceling afternoon classes and requiring
