For the first time since before the 1917 Bolshevik
Revolution, a volume of the Talmud, the central work of Jewish
civilization, has been published in Russia in the Russian language.
The translation, arrived here in the hands of a bearded
scholar from Israel, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, who has devoted much of
his life to interpreting, translating and popularizing the ancient
writings -- a gigantic collection of wisdom about law, culture,
ritual, science, legend and daily life that is at the heart of
Jewish tradition.
Steinsaltz previously has translated the tracts, some of which
date back 1,500 years, into Hebrew, English and French from their
original Aramaic and Old Hebrew. About 2 ...
