Martin Balsam, a character actor who won an Oscar for "A
Thousand Clowns" and played the ill-fated detective in "Psycho," was
found dead Feb. 13 in a Rome hotel. He was 76.
Mr. Balsam appeared to have died of natural causes, police
Chief Inspector Francesco Fucci said. The body was taken to a
hospital for a preliminary examination.
Fucci said a maid found Mr. Balsam at 9:50 a.m. lying on the
floor near his bed at the Ripetta Residence, a luxurious, long-stay
hotel in the center of Rome.
Mr. Balsam was dressed in the same clothes he had on when he
left a hotel bar the previous night about 8:30 for his room, leading
police to believe he died before going to bed, Fucci said.
