Article: CHARTER SCHOOLS STILL DEBATE SCHOOL YEAR

Many public school students are finally relaxing their brains at the beach or at summer camp, practicing strokes in sparkling swimming pools, and taming plastic gimp into tightly-knotted box stitches. Others are sleeping late and watching television.

Many, even most, but not all.

Students at some charter schools - with a school year of 200 days, compared with 180 for most public schools - were still in class last week as temperatures soared into the 80s and 90s. Students at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, which ended classes Thursday, had a field day and an awards ceremony, but they also sat at desks learning.
