Many public school students are finally relaxing their brains at
the beach or at summer camp, practicing strokes in sparkling swimming
pools, and taming plastic gimp into tightly-knotted box stitches.
Others are sleeping late and watching television.
Many, even most, but not all.
Students at some charter schools - with a school year of 200 days,
compared with 180 for most public schools - were still in class last
week as temperatures soared into the 80s and 90s. Students at Mystic
Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, which ended classes
Thursday, had a field day and an awards ceremony, but they also sat
at desks learning.
