If you knew what to look for, you could see it coming with the
inevitability of a train wreck at a country crossing. Management had
disappeared to an unscheduled off-site. The next day an e-mail went
out calling a companywide meeting. The vice president of marketing
informed our group we would have our own meeting an hour before the
company meeting. Attendance was mandatory.
As I walked out that evening, I saw that the CEO's office was
dark, the door closed, as it had been for the past week.
I told my wife the next morning before I left the house that I'd
call her in the afternoon, earlier if I had bad news. Although we
