MANCHESTER, N. H. - History is in the warp and woof of "Uncommon
Threads: New Twists on Textile Art" at the Currier Gallery of Art. In
the 19th century, Manchester was a center of textile production. The
14 artists in "Uncommon Threads" steep their art in generations of
handiwork. Although it wasn't planned, it's no accident that all the
artists in the show are women. By and large, women's hands still hold
the needles.
Conscious of their legacy, these artists bring contemporary
concerns to the sewing table. Some play up the tension inherent in
the domestic femininity ascribed to needlework by unveiling what goes
on beneath the neatly pressed linens of a well-run household. Others
