It's a job that demands a mix of prosecutorial skills,
administrative ability, and political savvy. But just which blend
best suits the position is an issue sparking debate in the low-
visibility race for Essex district attorney.
As they crisscross Essex County in search of votes, the three
Democratic contenders for the seat define the role of the district
attorney in strikingly different ways.
Richard A. Grundy of Salem and John J. Burke of North Andover, who
are both experienced prosecutors, tend to highlight the prosecutorial
