Article: Edmund G. `Pat' Brown Dies; Was Calif. Governor

Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, 90, the affable and accomplished California Democrat who served as his state's governor from 1959 to 1967 and whose son also served as the state's chief executive for eight years, died Feb. 16 at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif., after a heart attack.

He was governor during a time of enormous growth in population, industry, programs and expenses in the state. By the end of his term, California, like most large states, also was experiencing social and political unrest as civil rights and anti-war demonstrators were confronting government institutions on all levels.
