"Sir, Madam, I give you 2,000 camels for your daughter in
marriage," offers the spice seller at the small market outside the
temple at Korn Ombo, famed for its mummified crocodiles.
Having recently ridden camels around the pyramids, we are not
eager to acquire 2,000 of them -- certainly not at the cost of
13-year-old Charlotte.
"She's too young," we demur, hurrying away with our
hard-bargained-for packet of saffron.
With her red hair and blue eyes, Charlotte attracts unwanted
admirers wherever we stop on our Nile cruise. Thus our boat provides
a haven not only from heat and sand, but also from unwelcome
attentions.
