John Ruiz of Chelsea will defend his World Boxing Association
(WBA) heavyweight championship July 27 against undefeated No. 1
contender Kirk "Bubba" Johnson in Las Vegas. HBO will televise the
bout at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
It will be the second title defense for Ruiz, who won the WBA
crown with a 12-round decision March 3, 2001, over four-time
heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. They fought to a draw in
Ruiz's first defense Dec. 15.
Ruiz goes into the fight with a 37-4-1 record and 27 knockouts.
Johnson, from North Preston, Nova Scotia, puts his 32-0-1 mark (23
KOs) on the line. He has won six straight fights.
He is a three-time Canadian national champion and 1989 world
junior amateur ...
