RANDOLPH - In the 1990s, as prices in much of Greater Boston rose beyond the reach of many families, home buyers flocked to this bedroom town south of the city, a place that's 25 to 29 minutes by rail from South Station.

"Home prices may be crazy here, but they're even crazier in Boston," says Brian Johnson, a realtor at Kierman Realty Co. "I see lots of people who can't afford to live in Boston, Milton, Quincy, Braintree, and Canton, where everything costs up to $80,000 over Randolph's prices."
