Since mid-July, the girls' cheerleading team at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School has been training alongside the boys' football team. Three nights per week, while the boys run drills on the field, the girls practice leaps, jumps, and splits on the sidelines.

Equally committed to the gridiron, the players and cheerleaders will soon be on equal footing off the field. A $1 million renovation to bring the girls' locker room into compliance with Title IX, the federal law mandating equal access to athletics for boys and girls, should be completed by the start of school next month.

New lockers, team meeting space, and a coach's room will replace an outdated facility that hasn't been renovated ...
