China ended its menacing military maneuvers in the waters off
Taiwan today and the government in Taiwan reached out to China by
announcing a plan to lift a long-standing ban on direct travel,
trade and communication links to the mainland.
The moves, coming two days after the Taiwanese presidential
election, suggested China and Taiwan are looking for ways to defuse
tensions that have rattled Asian stability and damaged Sino-American
relations as the Chinese Communist government sought to reinforce
its insistence that the island is a renegade province destined to
reintegrate into the mainland.
