Cellular phone industry competitors have been holding their
breath a bit in the four months since American Personal
Communications Inc. turned on the country's first all-digital
wireless communications network in the Washington-Baltimore region.
Now they are exhaling in relief. The company said this week
that about 60,000 people have subscribed to Sprint Spectrum, which
is the brand name under which APC operates its network. Analysts and
competitors alike say it's a surprisingly rapid rate of growth -- 1
percent of the region's 6 million population -- even for an industry
that adds 1,278 new customers nationwide every hour.
