Q. Probably a silly question, but is Harvard, Mass., in any way
tied to Harvard University?
A. Not a silly question at all. And the easy answer is, "Yes."
John Harvard was born in Southwick, England, in 1607. The son of a
butcher and tavern owner, young Harvard grew up in a reasonably well-
to-do family.
He studied at Emmanuel College in Cambridge, England, its Puritan
ethics and education then an alternative to that put forth by the
Church of England.
In 1636, Harvard's mother died, leaving him an inheritance of real
estate and cash, some of which he used to purchase a library of some
merit. That same year he married Ann Sadler, the sister of an
