On the scrap metal heap at the Ipswich transfer station, a discerning eye can spot all sorts of useful castoffs: bicycles, scooters, racks for outdoor grills, and wheels galore, among other things.

With the transfer station set to close (for trash disposal, anyway) what will happen to the second life some of these items, and their new owners, have enjoyed?

A handful of communities around the region have a smart answer to that question: swap shops, places where residents can drop off their still-functional kitchen appliances, odd pieces of furniture, books, toys, and the like, for someone else to discover and bring home for free.
