Day One, the Big Vacation: What a sight. The mighty Zambezi
River.
That was my first thought.
My second thought packed more punch. "Oh, my God! I've signed
up to paddle on this gigantic river for four days? Sleeping in the
wilderness? With no hotel room for retreat? No car for a convenient
escape? No shower?"
It was just a quick bout of hesitation, one that my pride
quickly stifled. I can do this. Of course I can do this. It's just
a river and I can paddle it. Heck, I can become one with it, get
transcendent. And anyway, I was prepared for any eventuality
(largely because I was so ignorant of the full range of
