Allergy sufferers whose only choices in over-the-counter drugs
cause drowsiness will soon have another option: Federal regulators
announced yesterday that Claritin can be sold without a prescription,
making it the first nonsedating allergy medicine available without a
doctor's approval.
The company that makes Claritin, Schering-Plough Corp., expects
that the medicine will appear on drugstore and grocery shelves by mid-
December, although a price has not yet been set, company spokesman
William O'Donnell said.
Pharmacists and physicians hailed the decision to give patients -
