The 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings set an all-time NHL record with
62 regular season victories, but. Forever more, or at least until
some team gets 63 victories, these Red Wings always will be followed
by a "but."
For the second straight time, they were the top team during
the season and huge favorites to win the Stanley Cup -- something
they haven't done in 41 years. Yet they again fizzled in the
playoffs, eliminated in the Western Conference finals Wednesday
night by the Colorado Avalanche. Three years ago, when they had the
West's best record, they lost in the first round to a third-year
club making its first postseason appearance, the San Jose Sharks.
