Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday enthusiastically endorsed
a proposal by Boston University Medical Center to build a high-
security biodefense laboratory in the heart of the city, but
cautioned that the plan could unravel if hospital and university
administrators fail to cultivate support in surrounding
neighborhoods.
The medical center appears all but certain to pursue up to $1.6
billion in federal grants to construct and operate a Bio safety Level
4 facility, the most secure, sophisticated category of labs, reserved
for working with the deadliest germs and viruses known to mankind,
including anthrax, smallpox, and ebola.
