SOUTH WOODSTOCK, Vt. - In this rr state where dairy is legendary,
you have your Holsteins and your Jerseys, a brown Swiss here, a
Guernsey there. Not the smartest of beasts, not the friendliest, but
cute enough in a bovine sort of way, and hearty milk producers all.
Now, though, with milk prices in a slump and dairy farmers going
bankrupt, the mooing crowd is facing new competition - a curiously
intelligent bunch with eyes wide as saucers, please-pet-my-bristly-
head miens, and milk that one man here swears represents a new
chapter for Vermont's dairy industry.
