JUST BECAUSE Stereolab is the world's only bilingual Marxist
easy-listening groove band, that doesn't mean it wouldn't dominate
the field were it to have competition. This prolific London-based
ensemble (currently a septet, although composer Tim Gane and
Paris-bred singer Laetitia Sadier are the only founding members)
borrows shamelessly, but makes of its disparate influences music
that's consistently winning and distinctive.
The band's latest is titled "Emperor Tomato Ketchup," and
features the usual complement of songs whose titles describe their
own oscillating, mock-futuristic style: "Metronomic Underground,"
"Percolator," "Les Yper-Sound" and "Motoroller Scalatron" join the
